Pitch Pans – Penetration Pockets – Repair Guide

Pitch pans may provide waterproofing for clusters of roof penetrations such as pipes or irregular shaped objects such as angle irons.

Pitch pans can be repaired with sealant. If the filler material has cracked, pulled away from the sides of the pocket, or is below the level of the top of the pan, remove the loose or damaged sealant material.

Next wire brush and clean the object extending though the pan and the existing metal (where the membrane flashing does not extend into the pan). Then check and evaluate the membrane flashing. It may be best to extend the membrane an inch or two into the pan, which could extend its service life. If needed apply additional membrane.

After you mix and pour the sealant, you simply crown the sealer above the top of the penetration pocket to provide drainage away from the penetration.

Thermoset Membrane

What are Thermoset Membranes?

All thermoset membranes possess the quality of recovery. Since thermoset membranes are rubber like, it will stretch, but return to its original shape when released. The amount the material elongates is reduced by the presence of reinforcement in the membrane.

TYPE OF THERMOSET MEMBRANE

EPDM – One of the most common single-ply membranes used on buildings today.

EPICHLOROHYDRENE (ECH)

NEOPRENE (CR)

HYPALON (CSPE) – Hypalon can have a variety of repair procedures. The repair process can be different from the other type of membranes mentioned.

GENERAL REPAIR

Surface Coating Deterioration – EPDM, Neoprene, ECH, Hypalon

  1. Thoughly clean the surface of the membrane of all debris, dirt and unbonded coating using a pressure washer (keep the pressure around 700psi to avoid damaging the membrane).
  2. Allow the membrane to dry.
  3. Inspect for loose coating. If any additional loose coating is found, repeat steps 1-2.
  4. Reapply new coating that is compatible with the membrane material and existing coating.

2) Gain more leads – Consumers will search for contractors in the NRCA database, and may just find you. You will also receive a membership listing located on the authority roofing site.

3) The NRCA gives you access to helpful literature and documents. These guidelines can be used to help train new employees.

Green Buildings – Roof System

What is Green Roof Systems?

You will get a different answer depending on whom you ask. Personally I consider any roofing system that will lower a buildings annual energy bills a green system. These energy efficient systems can lower a buildings energy costs, and help promote a green building.

Various Types of Green Roofs

Garden Roof – A roof consisting of living plants placed on the rooftop.

Solar Roofs – Use solar power to produce energy.

Cool Roofs/Reflective Roofs/White Roofs – These roofs can be TPO, PVC, EPDM, or almost any type of roof system with a reflective coating. These systems can be even more cost efficient when used with the addition of skylights. And today even solar skylights are available.
